More Votes for Women Blocks and A Book Review

Jack's Delight: Ridicule as Humor
Still catching up on the Grandmother's Choice: Votes for Women Block of the Week.  These blocks are from January-February.
I realize that I can either keep up with sewing, keep up with blogging, keep up with reading blogs & social media, or keep up with replying to emails but not all four in the midst of all the myriad of other things in life.

Modern life is crowded. Isn't it?

I thought it would be fitting to add the latest book I finished to this post since it relates to women's history and the changing role of women in America:  The Girls of Atomic City:  The Untold Story of The Women Who Helped Win World War II by Denise Kiernan.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history in general, women's history, World War II history, America during the early to mid-20th-century, social history, or just a really well written book about something that is not well known.  The book was particularly fascinating to me because although I've read a lot of WWII books, I never read a book that focused on the Manhattan Project and development of the atomic bomb.     Most of the books I've read have focused on the beginning of the war or the war in Europe.  This book is more of a social history about the Oak Ridge, Tennessee, development and the workers, particularly the women, who worked there.   Intertwined throughout the book is a discussion of the discovery of fission and development of the bomb to provide context.  In fact, I think I liked this book so much because the author did a great job of putting gender roles, ideas, social mores, this part of the country (the South during Jim Crow), and the time period in context.  Ms. Kiernan also discusses the stories of women from a wide range of socio-economic classes, education, and life experiences and most importantly, includes the stories and experiences of African Americans at Oak Ridge.  In my opinion, this was a fascinating read and it is amazing to think that a place as large as Oak Ridge and the development of atomic bombs could be kept secret for so long, particularly as compared to today's world of everything everywhere being facebooked, instagramed, and tweeted.  If you read this book, let me know what you thought of it.

If you made it all the way to the end of this post, here's a gratuitous Remy photo just for you!

May Blocks & Cat-Mom Day

I hope everyone had a great mother's day yesterday.  I celebrated Cat-Mom Day since I had a rare mother's day Sunday off from Starbucks.  The cats decided to celebrate Cat-Mom Day by waking me up every half hour beginning at 4AM and continuing until I finally relented and got out of bed at 8ish.  Apparently, the cats did not get the memo that the only thing I wanted to do was sleep in for a change....

Of course, being cats, they were all back to sleep by mid-morning....
Case in point:  Remy basking in the sunlight.  I *may* have woke him up after taking this photo.

I did get some sewing time in this weekend and since it's nearly halfway through May, I thought better get caught up on those BOMs and BOWs that keep rolling on in.

First up, this week's Votes for Women block. An easy peasy one for a change.

More Votes for Women:  catch up blocks from December. There are 10 more blocks to go and I am still 9 blocks behind so it is a race to catch up to the end.  I hope to get more done this week.

Why...Hello...Neglected Blog

It seems as though I have been doing a million little things and haven't gotten around to blogging in awhile.  Of courses there's all that Stuff-That-is-Not-Sewing-Related, but who wants to be bored with that. Let's jump right to the sewing.

Edgar Poe and I are machine quilting a quilt and hope to get it done by the end of this month (oops make that the beginning of May).  He is doing an *excellent job* at whatever is the OPPOSITE of free-motion quilting.  More like dead-weight quilting.
He is so cute though, we forgive him for any extra hinderance.

Granny's Choice: "I'm the Anti"
I am about 2 months of Saturdays behind on my Grandmother's Choice Votes for Women Block of the Week. I better hurry it up and get caught up.  Here are some blocks I made that haven't made it to the blog yet, starting with this past Saturday's.

Coffee Cup: Not My Job Description

Contrary Husband

Mr. Roosevelt's Necktie

Tinted Chains: Click
Broad Arrow: Prison Garb

Ocean Wave: My Friend Erma

I have also begun the tedious onerous horrible terrible no good task of sorted, refolding, reorganizing, re-everythinging all my sewing stuff. Boo and hiss. But it is WAAAAYYYYYYY overdue.

I'll be so happy when it is done right?

Three Blocks for Wednesday

EDITED:  So very sorry if you received spam email from me.  My account was hacked and I'm fixing it.  One thousand apologies on behalf of the modern evil/scum of the earth that hack into accounts.

Finally a Bit of Sewing

There seems to be a paltry lack of sewing going on at Stella Bella Quilts.  I have no idea what I have been doing but I am still behind in everything--emails, sewing, blogging, reading blogs, etc.

If you commented on my posts or emailed me and I haven't responded, I am very sorry and thank you for commenting/emailing. I read everything and sometimes forget to reply back.

September and October flew away and now it's almost Thanksgiving.  I am working more at Starbucks and getting ready for the big weekend promotion this week (buy one, share one holiday drinks 2PM -5PM Nov. 15th-18th. Take a friend and )

This is the little bit I have done:

1. Sewed three backings together for Hubble, Civil War Block of the Week  and Good Fortune.  Made one binding, and have binding fabric for the other two quilts. Now I just need to get these to the quilter (not gifts--thankfully--all for me).  A big task finished 'cause I really dislike sewing backings together.

2. Figured out most of the Xmas gifts for this year--ordered some online, making some the Friday & Saturday after Thanksgiving, plans for the rest, no malls/stores/madness for me.

3. Made October & November's blocks for the Fat Quarter Shop Mystery Block of the Month
October FQS BOM
November FQS BOM
4. Made a couple Votes for Women Block of the Week blocks.  I am behind in this from being so busy in October and getting hung up on hand piecing (OY!!) the sunflower block from week 4 (I am still working on that one).
Here is New Jersey (week 5)
And Aunt Eliza's Star (week 6)

Nights are getting chilly and Stella has perfected the quintessential cat-curled-up-in-quilts pose.

My thoughts are with everyone two- and four-legged affected by Hurricane Sandy.  It is going to be a long road to recovering, particularly with winter arriving.  On behalf of my warm, safe, & healthy cats, I made donations to the ASPCA, which is on the ground helping rescue & reunite pets.  I know there are a lot of causes and people out there helping & it's much needed.

At Last, Some Quilty Content

I figured out today that I am approximately 2 weeks behind on everything.  Except laundry and taking care of the cats.  Everything else...

...fuggit about it

I do have a few blocks to show.  Not much in the way of completed quilts lately.

Today, I did catch up with the Grandmother's Choice Block of the Week.

Block #2 was Amethyst.  Look fast and move on 'cause this block is all kinds of wonky.  This is my second attempt and I am unhappy with it but even more unhappy at the thought of trying again.  Like I said move along...

Today's block was Union Square:  Red for Rebellion.  I liked the thought of a splash of red (and a bit of rebellion) in my quilt so I make it in red and white small prints.

Red little prints always make me think of my friend Sarah, No Blog. (waving to you Sarah)

Yesterday's mail brought the Fat Quarter Shop Block of the Month. I always like to do these right away so I don't get behind.  Usually the day the block arrive.  This is block 4.  I can't believe it's block 4 already.  I better get a jump on that finishing kit...

I had cut all the fabrics for this month's Schnibbles project (well really it's a Little Bites pattern), but had not started sewing.

Here is one block done.  It is so cute and tiny, you just want to kiss it. MWAH!

Here's some more hexies for the Hexy Quilt Along.  I have about half of them done.  These are fun to sew in the car on long trips and while watching TV.  I really am hooked on English paper-piecing now.

And if you made it all the way down here.  Here's some gratuitous Remy toes .
